For most men, the thought of getting the snip is daunting and off-putting, but the procedure is surprisingly straightforward, minimally invasive, relatively painless, and effective in preventing pregnancy.
The snip is the name given to a form of male sterilisation, medically termed a vasectomy. The process involves cutting the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the penis. The entire process can be done in around 20 minutes and without the need for general anaesthetic, making it an easy and effective form of permanent birth control. In contrast to female birth control, it is far safer, less painful, and much quicker to perform.
Any man who has made the decision that he wants to permanently remove the option of having children, and who is over the age of 18, can get a vasectomy. Usually, men who choose to have male sterilisation are men who are already fathers and who have made the decision with their partner not to have any more children.
Because a vasectomy is a permanent procedure, it is important to have considered your decision carefully and to have discussed it with your partner. Vasectomies can be reversed, but the procedure is more complicated, and has a high chance of failure. Even if the operation is successful, you may still not be able to have children, so you need to have considered this before making a final decision.
We offer a consultation service prior to the snip for anyone who wants to discuss the surgery further. During the consultation you can talk to your surgeon about any concerns, questions, or hesitations you may have regarding the snip.
The surgeon will start by numbing both sides of the scrotum with a local anaesthetic injection. Although this can be slightly uncomfortable, it shouldn’t feel worse than a slight pricking sensation before the anaesthetic takes effect. The surgeon will then use a special instrument to make small incisions on the side of the scrotum and lift out the tube that carries the sperm. This tube is then cut and both ends are sealed. The incisions are then cleaned, and if necessary one or two stitches may be used to help them heal.
The surgery should only take around 20-30 minutes and recovery is minimal. You should be able to go back to work within 1-2 days, as long as your job doesn’t involve heavy lifting or intense activity. You also won’t need any follow up appointments.
Recovery from a vasectomy is usually quite quick. Although you will want to take it easy for the next day or two, most normal work and life can be resumed after about 24 hours. You may experience some swelling, bruising, or pain in your scrotum, but you can take over-the-counter medication like paracetamol to help with the pain until it subsides after a few days.
You should continue to wash, and showering and bathing immediately is completely safe, but be sure to dry carefully and thoroughly. It is also recommended that men wear more tightly fitting underwear for the first few weeks after getting the snip to minimise discomfort and offer more support.
There are very few risks associated with the snip, and as sperm only accounts for around 5% of ejaculation fluid, you probably won’t notice any change at all in functioning.
If you are concerned about any emotional effect male sterilisation may have then you may need to have a consultation before going through with the surgery to make sure that you are properly prepared.
